MTN Cameroon employees rallied together during the 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign to build eight classrooms and a dormitory at two schools for visually impaired learners.

The team also constructed and equipped three libraries in centres for the disabled. The activities are estimated to have impacted more than 4500 beneficiaries.

Y’ello Care is an employee volunteer programme which runs across MTN’s operations from 1 to 21 June annually. Themed “Investing in Education for All”, the overall winner receives the US$100 000 Group President and CEO prize, to plough back into community projects.

“Every year, we are humbled by the commitment of employees across our geographies who give their time selflessly to improve education and learning conditions in their communities. Their efforts continue to make a difference in the lives of learners in the communities that host us each year,” says Paul Norman, MTN Group Chief HR and Corporate Affairs Officer.”

Over 90% of staff at MTN Cameroon participated in this year’s Y’ello Care programme. The employees also raised more than US$ 18 000 towards the project activities. In addition to the construction projects, MTN Cameroon staff designed an ICT training workshop for secondary schools teachers, career advisers and officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education, to upgrade their teaching and learning techniques.

Commenting on her operation’s performance, MTN Cameroon CEO, Philisiwe Sibiya says, “The strength of every winning organisation is its employees, and that is our strength at MTN Cameroon. Winning the 21 Days trophy is a truly humbling experience, and proof of the selflessness and Can-Do spirit of our staff who tirelessly commit to better the livelihood of communities every year. Thanks to the 21 Days of Y’ello Care Programme, volunteerism has become a lifestyle for us. It is part of our DNA! This year, 96% of our workforce participated in the programme and we are happy to have contributed to the development of the education sector in Cameroon by investing in inclusive education.”

Other awardees are MTN Rwanda (Leadership), MTN Guinea Conakry (Most Improved), MTN Nigeria (Spirit Award), Mascom Botswana (Can-Do attitude), MTN SA (Relationship category) and MTN Ghana (Integrity).

Ebola Is Now Sexually Transmitted, Woman Dies After Having Unprotected Sex With Survivor

In horrifying news, the first case of Ebola being sexually transmitted has just been reported, resulting in the death of a 44-year-old Liberian woman in March this year.

ebola

She and a male Liberian Ebola survivor – who had tested negative to the disease via several blood tests, the last of which took place all the way back in October 2014 – had unprotected sex on March 7 this year. She contracted Ebola, and died just 15 days later.

After her death, the survivor voluntarily provided his blood and semen for testing. His blood once again came back negative, yet his semen tested positive.

According to The New England Journal of Medicine, which reported on the woman’s death, Ebola is only detectable in the bloodstream during acute illness.

However, it can linger in the body for much longer, and has been found in breast milk up to 15 days after onset, in vaginal secretions up to 33 days, in aqueous humour – a.k.a. eye juice – up to 98 days, and in semen up to 101 days. (In this case, the survivor had last tested negative to Ebola a full 155 days before sexual intercourse.)

Yet sexual transmissions of Ebola are a rare event, says a Medecins Sans Frontieres doctor who specialises in hemorrhagic fevers and has worked extensively with Ebola sufferers in Liberia.

“Finding Ebola virus RNA in semen does not imply that it is infectious, and they are carrying out further testing to look for active virus in the specimens,” says Dr Ardman Sprecher.

“There are more than 17,000 survivors of this EVD outbreak, approximately half of whom are male. Most of these male survivors are nearly one year into their convalescence. If sexual transmission from survivors were an important means of disease propagation, we would have seen a number of cases by now.”

Liberia was declared to be free of Ebola for the second time on September 3 this year, after 4,808 deaths and 10,672 reported cases.

“Let us not forget that survivors have already endured a painful severe illness, and many emerge from it to find that friends and family members have died,” says Dr Sprecher. “If they are then treated as pariahs and threats, we add a terrible unkindness on top of their suffering.”

“They should be treated with all the compassion we can muster.”

The tale of Seven Seas restaurant

The Seven Seas restaurant is the best restaurant I have ever had a signature meal in Kampala.

seven seas

The meal was fixed to suit my taste, don’t ask me what I order for!

The restaurant is found at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel near the patio just after the Equator bar on the right.

The spectacular fresh breath taking ambience with celestial classical melodies from the well fitted speakers calm and relax you to enjoy your meal.

The open air architecture allowing fresh air from the surrounding and view of beautiful trees is truly worth to experience.

The food, the bites and the drinks served here are meticulously prepared and served with expertise from their highly experienced chefs like Mehmet Demirogullari and waiters respectively.

For those challenged by sea food, the restaurant offers you a variety of both continental and local cuisines.

Probably one of the very few restaurants in Kampala that serve sea food as well as local cuisines

The sight of the elegantly dressed waiters and waitresses who are so hospitable make you feel at home not to forget the wonderful reception you receive when you arrive at the Restaurant.

Not only that, the ship imitated décor around the restaurant makes you want to know more about the restaurant as you wait for your meal.

The spectacular huge ship like table in the centre of the restaurant keeps your eyes looking around for more; I must say that’s a unique way to keep a guest entertained.

If you are worried about delayed orders, you are now sorted because all orders are given priority and you are served in the shortest time.

I think this restaurant is worth trying out because I was all smiles when I was there. It’s good for dates, meetings, luncheons and exploratory guests.

National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has outlined four key strategic imperatives that will enable the Fund size to grow by fourfold from the current shs5.8 trillion to shs20 trillion by 2025 in an effort to retain and return better value to its members.

nssf

“The strategy that will deliver the customer experience will be based on; building a strong financial base so we can secure a better life for our members, innovating and becoming more relevant to our member, excelling on business processes that touch our members and making NSSF a delightful place to work for our staff so they can serve our members better,” said Richard Byarugaba, NSSF Managing Director, at the third edition of the NSSF Annual Members Meeting (AMM) on Wednesday.

“A motivated and engaged workforce, supported by excellent processes, and a strong financial base that delivers superior results, will all work together to give members a reason to choose to stay with NSSF. In summary, over the next 10 years, Fund objectives are to help the fund achieve; growth in customer satisfaction to over 90%, provide members with a return of at least 2% above 10 year inflation, grow Fund size to Shs20 trillion and become one of best pension Fund worldwide,”  he told guests at the AMM.

The Members Meeting attracted over 700 people, including NSSF contributors, employers, workers unions’ representatives, government representatives and members of the public, at Kampala Serena Hotel.

“To build a strong financial base, we aim at preserving our member savings through prudent investments that provide for a real return to members. This will be determined by improvement in compliance and unlocking the value in key projects in Lubowa, Pension Towers and Temangalo,” he said.

The Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija, commended the Fund’s strategic plan and vision. “As Government we shall maintain interest in the Fund. We are keen on seeing the Fund, the country’s National scheme and largest financial institution, continue to remain a major player in the sector and play an even bigger role in the economic development of the country.”

He added; “On this note, I would like to challenge the Bank of Uganda and other government statutory bodies to come up with innovative financial products such as infrastructure bonds and municipal bonds that provide a good return on investment to tap into the growing NSSF investment portfolio.”

AMM, now an annual event, is in fulfillment of the Fund’s commitment to Transparency and Accountability. It is a platform that enables it report to members, who are the owners of the Fund, performance over the last year, and give them a picture of the strategic direction of the Fund.

At the same event, 25 companies were recognized for compliance over the last year. “We recognised the best employers in terms of compliance, basing on our 360 degrees compliance check. In other words, employers should be remitting contributions for all their employers, these contributions should be remitted on time, and in the right amounts of money as per their legal obligations,” Barbra Arimi, NSSF Head of Marketing and Communications, said.

The Fund announced an interest rate of 13% for the Financial Year 2014/15, which translates into shs514 billion in monetary terms. The new rate is an increase from 11.5%, about Shs366 billion, the Fund paid last year. It means that savers of the Fund will earn shs144 billion more this year compared to shs88 billion increment the last financial year.  This is in line with the Fund’s commitment to pay a competitive return to its members.

A few months back, singer Jose Chameleone announced that he had parted ways with manager Robert Nkuuke Jackson popularly known as Mutima.

Last Friday evening, the ‘Wale Wale’ hit maker issued a statement regarding the issue in which he thanked Mutima for the good work done but insisted that he (Mutima) is no longer his manager.

“I take this platform to Thank Nkuuke Robert Jackson (Mutima) for his extended loyalty as he served as Artiste Manager for me from 16th May 2014 to 16th May 2015. Your one year in Office representing me as a brand will always be appreciated. I here so notify the general Public, Friends, Fans and most important my Business associates that Robert Jackson Nkuuke aka MUTIMA is No Longer representing Jose Chameleone as Manager. Robert  thank you for your service, and outstanding qualities. Together with Team Chameleone and Leone Island Family, I wish you the very best in your next endeavors. May God bless you” Chameleone posted on his Facebook wall.

The pencil thin singer’s statement has since had the public wondering as to why he decided to issue it several months after firing Mutima.

Sources close to Chameleone reveal that even after his contract was terminated, Mutima has been masquerading as the singer’s manager and collecting money from people.

“Chameleone is mad that Mutima continues to refer to himself as his manager. He wants him (Mutima) to stop using the singer’s name to collect money from people,” intimates the source.

Chameleone even wants Mutima to change his social media information which sill shows that he is the singer’s manager.

Chameleone concluded his post by informing the public to personally contact him through his email address and mobile phone number in case of booking.

However, another source reveals that another yet to be identified music promoter is behind Mutima’s axing. Watch the space!!!

US attacks Moscow welcome for Assad

The White House has strongly condemned a visit to Moscow by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

syria

A spokesman criticised Russia for putting on a “red carpet welcome”.

The Syrian leader’s trip on Tuesday came three weeks after Russia began air strikes in Syria against Islamic State militants and other forces.

It was Mr Assad’s first overseas trip since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011. The conflict has claimed more than a quarter of a million lives.

On Thursday, a team of Russian MPs is due to meet President Assad and the head of the Syrian parliament in Damascus.

While in Moscow, Mr Assad made a point of expressing his gratitude for Russia’s military intervention in the conflict.

He said Russia’s involvement had stopped “terrorism” becoming “more widespread and harmful” in Syria.

For his part, Mr Putin said Moscow’s hope was that a “long-term resolution can be achieved on the basis of a political process with the participation of all political forces, ethnic and religious groups”.

The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says that by hosting the Syrian leader, President Putin was sending a clear message to the West – that Moscow is a key player in the Middle East, and that there can be no solution to the Syrian conflict without Russia’s involvement.

‘Emboldening’

“We view the red carpet welcome for Assad, who has used chemical weapons against his own people, at odds with the stated goal by the Russians for a political transition in Syria,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters.

A state department official said it was not surprised by the visit, but the main US concern was Russia’s continued military support, which he said had emboldened the Assad government – something that would only serve to lengthen the civil war.

In the wake of Mr Assad’s surprise visit, President Putin spoke to a number of Middle Eastern leaders to brief them.

They included the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which give support to Syrian rebels.

Mr Putin also spoke to the Egyptian and Jordanian leaders, Russian news agencies said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that after the visit “the Syrian government has no legitimacy left”.

To be a champion, you have to see the big picture.

It’s not about winning and losing; it’s about every day hard work and about thriving on a challenge.

It’s about embracing the pain that you’ll experience at the end of a race and not being afraid.

Cameroon Gitawo
Cameroon Gitawo

I think people think too hard and get afraid of a certain challenge.

A 35 year old Ugandan businessman who is now worth $35million attributes all his success to hard work and taking on new challenges.

“What kept me moving is that i grew up loving real estate so it was hard for me to wait for a market which only favoured the white people.  I pushed myself in since i had a good background in sales.”

“For now the business is smooth, we don’t experience a lot of challenges since we are permanent residents. We are successful businessmen and South African Economy needs us.

“Money and Gold party will be huge and massive,” said Gitawo before adding that; “TMT Africa has already authorized more than 450 million. This money is already in the hands of TMT Africa, money and gold management team.”

money team

This party was introduced not to necessarily to show off or show disrespect to the youth but a base line and motivation to the youth that anyone can make it in life.”

“We want to use the Money and Gold party to introduce TMT Africa Music Promotions to East Africa to help improve the music industry in Uganda.”

Message To The Youth

My message to the youth is very brief, focusing on education, self-discipline and the choices they make.

The youth must understand that your future is what you do today not tomorrow.

If there certain things you don’t want in your life you must stop them today not tomorrow because in my opinion i have never seen tomorrow.

At least 30,000 people are facing starvation in South Sudan, the UN has said.

South Sudan's civil war has left a third of its population in crisis
South Sudan’s civil war has left a third of its population in crisis

Three UN agencies warned that a famine could develop in southern Unity State, where fighting has prevented deliveries of humanitarian aid.

Two years of civil war have left nearly 4m people – particularly young children – facing severe hunger, the UN said.

Both the government and rebel forces have accused each other of breaching a peace agreement signed in August.

The conflict has left a third of the country’s population is in crisis, up 80% since last year, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), children’s agency Unicef and the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a joint statement.

“People are on the edge of a catastrophe that can be prevented,” said WFP chief Joyce Luma.

‘Catastrophic’ situation

Fighting has disrupted harvests, food and fuel prices have risen and some displaced families are being forced to survive on a single daily meal of fish and water lilies.

An official famine has not yet been declared, but almost a million people are described as living in a “catastrophic” situation, the highest level of food emergency under the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which classifies hunger on a scale of one to five.

south sudan map with unity state

Under the IPC, a famine is declared when 20% of the population are deemed to be in a catastrophic situation.

Families have been “extraordinary” in trying to sustain their children but have now exhausted all their coping mechanisms, said Jonathan Veitch, head of Unicef in South Sudan.

“Agencies can support, but only if we have unrestricted access. If we do not, many children may die,” Mr Veitch said.

The civil war began in December 2013, when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings that has split the country along ethnic lines.

Both sides are accused of perpetrating ethnic massacres, recruiting and killing children and carrying out widespread rape, torture and forced displacement of populations to force out their opponents.

“Iam relieved that you’re alive. When I saw the wreckage of the car, I thought no one walked out alive. It’s amazing that you are out of danger,” Kadaga added.

Nakasero Hospital’s Dr. Isaac Kajja confirmed to journalists at the MPs bedside that she had undergone successful surgery on the right lower limb and the right thigh bone which got fractured during the accident.

“The medical team is happy that the patient is recovering steadily. She is able to conduct minimal business. We wanted her to be hospitalized for two weeks but the rate of improvement is tremendous,” he said.

She commended media for the coverage it has given to the sport over the years and encouraged them to continue promoting the sport especially talented Ugandan drivers.

“Today it is indeed my great honor and privilege to present our contribution to the Uganda Motorsport Club for the UMOSPOC Independence Rally that revs off this weekend, starting Friday to Sunday. 1: Yes, you can get pregnant the first time that you have sex.

You may have heard that a girl can’t get pregnant the first time that she has sex. The truth is, if a boy and a girl have sex and don’t use contraception, she can get pregnant, whether it’s her first time or she has had sex lots of times.

sexfacts

A boy can get a girl pregnant the first time he has sex. If you’re female and have sex, you can get pregnant as soon as you start ovulating (releasing eggs). This happens before you have your first period. Find out more about periods and the menstrual cycle.

Using contraception protects against pregnancy. Using condoms also protects against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Before you have sex, talk to your partner about contraception, and make sure you’ve got some contraception. Find out about getting contraception and tips on using condoms.

2: Yes, you can get pregnant if a boy withdraws (pulls out) his penis before he comes.

There’s a myth that a girl can’t get pregnant if a boy withdraws his penis before he ejaculates (comes). The truth is, pulling out the penis won’t stop a girl from getting pregnant.

Before a boy ejaculates, there’s sperm in the pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-come), which leaks out when he gets excited. It only takes one sperm to get a girl pregnant. Pre-come can contain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so withdrawing the penis won’t prevent you from getting an infection.

If a boy says he’ll take care to withdraw before he ejaculates, don’t believe him. Nobody can stop themselves from leaking sperm before they come. Always use a condom to protect yourself against STIs, and also use other contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

3: Yes, you can get pregnant if you have sex during your period.

There’s a myth that a girl can’t get pregnant if she has sex during her period. The truth is, she can get pregnant at any time of the month if she has sex without contraception.

Sperm can survive for several days after sex, so even if you do it during your period, sperm can stay in the body long enough to get you pregnant.

4: Yes, you can get pregnant if you have sex standing up, sitting down or in any other position.

You may have heard the myth that a girl can’t get pregnant if she has sex standing up, sitting down, or if she jumps up and down afterwards. The truth is, there’s no such thing as a ‘safe’ position if you’re having sex without a condom or another form of contraception.

There are also no ‘safe’ places to have sex, including the bath or shower. Pregnancy can happen whatever position you do it in, and wherever you do it. All that’s needed is for a sperm to meet an egg.

5: No, you can’t get pregnant by having oral sex.

You may have heard that you can get pregnant by having oral sex. The truth is, a girl can’t get pregnant this way, even if she swallows sperm. But you can catch STIs through oral sex, including gonorrhoea, chlamydia and herpes. It’s safer to use a condom on a penis, and a dam (a very thin, soft plastic square that acts as a barrier) over the female genitals if you have oral sex.

6: No, drinking alcohol doesn’t make you better in bed.

There’s a myth that drinking alcohol makes you perform better in bed. The truth is, when you’re drunk it’s hard to make smart decisions. Alcohol can make you take risks, such as having sex before you’re ready, or having sex with someone you don’t like. Drinking won’t make the experience better. You’re more likely to regret having sex if you do it when you’re drunk. Find out more about sex and alcohol.

7: You can’t use clingfilm, plastic bags, crisp packets or anything else instead of a condom. They won’t work.

There’s a myth that you can use a plastic bag, clingfilm or a crisp packet instead of a condom. The truth is, you can’t. Only a condom can protect against STIs.

You can get condoms free from:

community contraceptive clinics

sexual health and genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics

some young persons services

You can also buy them from pharmacies and shops. Make sure that they have the CE mark on them, as this means that they’ve been tested to European safety standards. Find sexual health services near you, including contraception clinics.

8: No, a boy’s testicles (balls) will not explode if he doesn’t have sex.

You may have heard the myth that if a boy doesn’t have sex his balls will explode. The truth is, not having sex doesn’t harm boys or girls, and a boy’s balls will not explode.

Boys and men produce sperm all the time. If they don’t ejaculate the sperm is absorbed into their body. Ejaculation can happen if they masturbate or have a wet dream. They don’t have to have sex. Find out about boys’ bodies.

9: No, condoms can’t be washed out and used again.

Don’t believe anyone who says that you can wash condoms and use them again. The truth is, you can’t use a condom more than once, even if you wash it out. If you’ve used a condom, throw it away and use a new one if you have sex again.

This is true for male condoms and female condoms. Condoms need to be changed after 30 minutes of sex because friction can weaken the condom, making it more likely to break or fail. Get tips on using condoms.

10: Yes, you can get pregnant if you have sex only once.

You may have heard the myth that you have to have sex lots of times to get pregnant. The truth is, you can get pregnant if you have sex once. All it takes is for one sperm to meet an egg. To avoid pregnancy, always use contraception, and use a condom to protect against STIs.

11: You don’t always get symptoms if you have an STI.

You may have heard the myth that you’d always know if you had an STI because it would hurt when you pee, or you’d notice a discharge, unusual smell or soreness. This isn’t true.

Many people don’t notice signs of infection, so you won’t always know if you’re infected. You can’t tell by looking at someone whether they’ve got an STI. If you’re worried that you’ve caught an STI, visit your GP or local sexual health clinic. Check-ups and tests for STIs are free and confidential, including for under-16s. Find out about sexual health services near you.

12: Yes, women who have sex with women can get STIs.

You may have heard that women who sleep with women can’t get or pass on STIs. This isn’t true. If a woman has an STI and has sex with another woman, the infection can be passed on through vaginal fluid (including fluid on shared sex toys), blood or close body contact.

Always use condoms on shared sex toys, and use dams to cover the genitals during oral sex. A dam is a very thin, soft plastic square that acts as a barrier to prevent infection (ask about dams at a pharmacist or sexual health clinic). If a woman is also having sex with a man, using contraception and condoms will help to prevent STIs and unintended pregnancy.

13: Not all gay men have anal sex.

You may have heard that all gay men have anal sex. This isn’t true. Anal sex, like any sexual activity, is a matter of preference. Some people choose to do it as part of their sex life and some don’t, whether they’re gay, straight, lesbian or bisexual.

According to the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (taken in 2000), 12.3% of men and 11.3% of women had had anal sex in the previous year. Whatever sex you have, use a condom to protect yourself and your partner against STIs. However, having sex isn’t the only way to show your feelings for someone.

14: A girl is not ready to have sex just because she’s started her periods.

You may have heard that a girl should be having sex once she starts having periods. This isn’t true.

Starting your periods means that you’re growing up, and that you could get pregnant if you were to have sex. It doesn’t mean that you’re ready to have sex, or that you should be sexually active.

People feel ready to have sex at different times. It’s a personal decision. Most young people in England wait until they’re 16 or older before they start having sex. Find out more about periods and the menstrual cycle.

15: Help for sexual problems is available if you need it.

If you want to talk to someone in confidence, you can call the sexual health helpline on 0300 123 7123.

Find sexual health services near you.
