Burundi’s army chief of staff has survived an assassination attempt on a busy road in the capital, Bujumbura.

General Prime Niyongabo was heading to his office in the morning when armed men attacked his motorcade.

Burundi’s deputy police chief Gen Godefroid Bizimana told the AFP news agency the army chief was unharmed.

Burundi has suffered serious unrest since President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision in April to seek a third term in polls he went on to win in July.

In May he survived a coup attempt.

A senior army general was killed last month in similar circumstances.

Earlier this week the spokesman for a party opposed to President Nkurunziza’s third term was shot dead in Bujumbura.

The Speaker said the event has been effective in promoting togetherness across the nation, which has been evident in the growing number of dignitaries who attend the Prayer Breakfast.

“When these prayers started in 1997, we had about 20 people attending, however, this year we expect over 1,500 guests,” explained Hon. Tim Lwanga, one of the event organisers.

Honourable Benson Obua-Ogwal said the prayer breakfast will also focus on praying for the nation to remain united so that it does not plunge into chaos during the forthcoming elections.

Building and programing a robot from scratch may sound like an impossible task in the minds of most primary school pupils and parents.

Enthusiastic children paying attention to their trainer, Solomon King on day one of the MTN Junior Robotics Camp at MTN Towers.

But MTN Uganda, in partnership with FundiBots a Ugandan based organization that focuses on robotics training in schools is aiming to change that mind-set.

The two are  organizing a training camp, aimed at equipping Juniorsaged between 9-12 years with skills that can enable them solve real-world problems through digital design.

The 3 day event dubbed the ‘MTN Junior’s Robotics Camp’ will have 50 children from 10 schools in Kampala with each school being represented by five children.

The training commencestoday, the 11th of September 2015 and will go on for 3 days at the MTN Towers on Hunington road.

According to Ms. Mapula Bodibe, MTN Uganda’s Chief Marketing Officer, the goal of the camp is to introduce and teach thechildren;digital skills used in the building of robots from a more practical, fun and open environment and in the process, expose them to new ways of thinking.

“MTN is proud to partner with Fundi Bots, which is apioneer provider of robotics design training in Ugandan schools.

Our intention is to create and inspire a new generation of Ugandan children to be the future problem solvers, innovators and change makers,” Ms. Bodibe said.

“We hopethe children willleave the program with a new love and passion for design facilitated by innovations in the digital space. We also want them to know that anyone, regardless of age, gender or background can use digital platforms in a creative and innovative ways,” she added.

Ms. Bodibe further highlighted the significance of initiatives like the Junior Robotics Camp in solving problems like youth unemployment and lack of practical skills.

“One of the biggest challenges facing Uganda today is youth unemployment. We believe that as we inspire children to harness innovation and become problem solvers at a very young age, we will create a generation of job-creating youth that will be the future economic engine of this country,” she concluded.

During the training, participants will be introduced to the principles of programming inan interactive and friendly environment. Fundi Bots Founder Solomon King Benge said he wants young people to develop a creative set of skills they can apply to solve issues specific to their lives.

“A number of Ugandan schools remain slow incatching up with these kind of innovations and alternative ways of solving simple problems in peoples’ lives. At Fundi Bots, we focus a little more on the technological process of building robots as a way for students to look at the world around them from a solution oriented perspective,” Benge said.

“By guiding students through problem identification, brainstorming, collaboration, construction, programming, final deployment and system feedback, we will show them how life’s challenges can be solved usingdigital and technological tools,” he added.

The childrenwill each receive a certificate of participation at the end of the 3 days event.

Reasons Why You Are Drier Than Zari

If you’ve never had a problem getting wet before but now your privates feel like the Sahara, don’t panic—you’re not going through early menopause.

Zari

Fact is, there are many reasons why younger women experience vaginal dryness, and the problem is a lot more common than you’d think. Still, it’s not something you want to blow off.

It’s important for your hoo-ha to be moist, and not just because lubrication makes sex feel more pleasurable.

Vaginal wetness keeps tissues healthy and even serves as a line of defense against infections and STDs, says Alyssa Dweck, an ob-gyn in Westchester, New York, and co-author of V Is for Vagina.

Use a water-based vaginal lubricant in the meantime as you suss out what’s leaving you dry.

  1. Your Body Craves More Foreplay

The typical rom-com sex scene goes from locking lips to full-on intercourse in about 30 seconds. In the real world, we call b.s.—most women need at least a little more direct stimulation before they’re wet enough for penetration, says Dweck.

  1. You’re Stressed Out

Stress takes the blame for a lot of health issues, and you can add vaginal dryness to the list. If it doesn’t temporarily kill your libido outright, feeling anxious or pressured can make it harder to get turned on, says Dweck. Once the stress lifts, your juices should start flowing.

  1. You’re on Cold Meds

“Over-the-counter cold and allergy formulas contain antihistamines that dry out the mucus membranes in your nose, as well as your vagina,” says Dweck. Not all women experience it, but it can happen, and things will moisten up again once you stop dosing up.

  1. Your Birth Control Pill Is Messing With You

“One little-known side effect of oral contraceptives is reduced vaginal lubrication,” says Dweck. And unlike some other side effects that happen when you first go on the Pill, this one probably won’t clear up in a few months. “I’ll usually advise my patients to use store-bought lubricant, or if it’s really uncomfortable, consider going off the Pill and trying another type of birth control,” she says.

  1. You Just Had a Baby

Giving birth (and breastfeeding, too) does a number on your body and changes your sex life in unexpected ways, including lowering levels of estrogen—the hormone responsible for maintaining vaginal lubrication. A few months post-birth, when your regular cycle returns and you stop lactating, the slippery stuff will be back.

Kenyan ‘gynaecologist’ accused of raping patients

A Kenyan man accused of posing as a gynaecologist and allegedly raping women in his clinic after sedating them has appeared in court in Nairobi.

A national manhunt started after video footage broadcast on Kenyan TV appeared to show an unidentified man assaulting an unconscious woman on a clinic bed.

Mugo wa Wairimu has denied the allegations and said the report was an evil plot by his enemies.

Kenya’s Medical Practitioners’ Board says he is not a registered doctor.

The accused man was arrested on Thursday at a hotel outside Nairobi after members of the public called the police.

They accused him of operating a number of clinics in Nairobi without a valid licence.

He was taken to court to be charged but the prosecution said investigations were not complete.

Mr Wairimu will be detained for two weeks while police carry out further enquiries.

The BBC’s Odhiambo Joseph in Nairobi says the court was told that releasing Mr Wairimu might endanger his life because of growing public outrage, something his lawyers did not oppose.

Mr Warimu was not asked to enter a plea.

Four women have lodged official complaints with the police so far over claims of sexual abuse.

Citizen TV said on their report, which was broadcast on Sunday, that they do not know the identity of the woman in the video, which was filmed by a suspicious staff member, or if she is aware of the alleged assault.

Gen. Aronda was serving in a very Difficult Environment – Kizza Besigye

The shocking news of Gen Aronda’s death must have jolted everyone that knew him and I was no exception.

Former FDC leader Kizza Besigye addresses a press conference in Kampala recently.
Former FDC leader Kizza Besigye .

Even though, as a medical doctor, I am familiar with the phenomenon of sudden death, when it happens to someone you know well, it’s quite startling.
I know how much worse it must be for those who lived and worked closely with the General. My thoughts and sympathy especially go to his family, relatives, workmates and close friends.
I have known Gen Aronda since mid 1982, when we met in Mondlane Unit of the National Resistance Army (NRA).

The Unit was then situated at Kitemamasanga, near Semuto, about 45 km north of Kampala.
The young and slender man that I met then had just completed his university degree and his demeanour has remained the same till his passing.

He was soft-spoken, humble, rather shy, but with steely determination.
I undertook my first military training with Gen Aronda and other recruits, mainly, his colleagues from Makerere University.

These included Maj Gen Benon Biraro and several others that have since passed on.
Our instructors were especially rough with us. They had a perception that “intellectuals”, as our type was referred to, were too “soft” and needed extra hardening to prepare us for the bush war life.

Gen Aronda took all the maltreatment with grace, while some of the colleagues tempers boiled over.
The tough and often dire times of the bush war had turned us into blood brothers and sisters.

Many comrades succumbed to the tough times and some barely scrapped through those times.

Gen Aronda’s steely determination brought him to the end of the war in “one piece”.
I trained with Gen Aronda again in 1990, when we did our Officers’ Basic Course (OBC) in Bombo.

The six-month course, under Tanzanian (TPDF) instructors, was even much tougher than our bush training. Once again, Gen Aronda withstood the tough conditions and performed very well.
Since my retirement from the UPDF in 2000, I didn’t have much interaction with Gen Aronda.

Serving military officers are generally very uncomfortable, even scared, to be seen talking to political opposition leaders of my type!

This is because of the fear of being “misunderstood” to be sympathetic to their views.
Whenever I’ve chanced into Gen Aronda, he was polite and thoughtful in whatever he said. He has been full of life and was still in the prime years of his life.

He was highly disciplined in his personal life.
In most of our Ugandan cultures, every death causes relatives and friends to speculate on where the evil hand came from. There is a saying in Ruhororo that “Tihaine omufu atarogwa”, meaning that every dead person was bewitched.
Even in the best of times, sudden death raises strong suspicion of possible foul play.

Yet, Gen Aronda’s death happened in times that cannot be remotely considered as good. It occurred against a background of many suspicious deaths of high-ranking government and military officials.
It also happened against a background of a specific warning that his life could be in eminent danger.

The concerns spelt out in the Gen Sejusa’s letter, which triggered serious fallout in government security circles cannot be ignored, when such a death occurs.
It’s prudent that all possible angles relevant to the inevitable investigation into the cause and circumstances surrounding Gen Aronda’s death are explored.

This is important for the family, the government and the country at large.

It’s wrong to hush up any information that may have relevance to establishing the cause of death.
Gen Aronda was a fine officer and a gentleman, who, like a number of his colleagues, was serving in a very difficult and nefarious environment.

He has endeavoured to serve his country well. At the time of his death, he had stuck his head out to push back the notorious illegal militia of Maj (rtd) Kakooza Mutale.
My heartfelt condolences go the widow and children, the family members, relatives, the NRA/UPDF comrades and all friends.
I pray that the Almighty God rests his soul in eternal peace. AMEN.

Gen. Aronda Nyakairima Gone Too Soon – Norbert Mao

We all woke up to the sad news of the sudden death of Gen. Aronda Nyakairima. I convey my condolences to the entire nation for the loss of a refined, civil and decent man.

To Linda (the widow) and the entire family I pray for you and ask God to surround you with blessings and give you the fortitude to rise above grief.

There are no words to console you but we hope the memory of Gen. Aronda and the good things he achieved and those he strived for will reassure you that his short life was not in vain.
Gen. Aronda went to school in Kitgum High School. He used to lament the brokenness of Ugandan society.

Like Amelia Kyambadde who went to Sacred Heart SS in Gulu, or my brothers who went to Ntare, these people went to school far from their homes of origin.

That is what build patriotism, not indoctrination or the stigmatization of certain ethnic groups. “When will it be possible for young people to discover a broader identity than their tribal roots?”, we would lament together.

“When will a Nyakairima, go to Kitgum High again?”.
I dare say Gen. Aronda with all his sterling record of service became increasingly a conflicted man.

What he believed in and what he was compelled to do were no longer in tandem.

Forced to respond to accusations in parliament about police brutality, he always found himself in, an awkward situation.

I recall the meeting our team of political and civil society leaders had with him together with IGP Gen. Kayihura.

It was clear that Aronda saw no justification for police brutality against unarmed civilians.

The meeting was held after we had been violently dispersed in Mbale and Soroti.

Aronda knew what was right but was often forced to follow the dictates of the regime. He was caught up.
That means that in a way he was a hostage. The Museveni regime has turned many of its co-creators into hostages.

And like all hostages, they are in danger. As the Baganda say they are the “enkoko y’omutamivu’ (the drunkard’s cockerel).

The cockerel can be dispensed with anytime. But what is making Museveni drunk? He is drunk on power.

Excess unbridled power. The power is unbridled because the people who the constitution says are the sovereign power have been totally disconnected from all the levers of power.

All the levers of power are in Museveni’s hands. The promise of regular, free and fair elections in our constitution is a dead letter! We go through empty rituals and call them elections.

Even the international community endorses such sham olio elections and say ‘at least Museveni is better than Amin’.

We should feel insulted when our democratic aspirations are measured according to the standards of one of the most notorious dictators in history.

But for Museveni, power has become and end in itself. With every participation in another sham election, where our votes don’t count, we the leaders who seek change are seen as masqueraders in a tragicomedy.
This then is a systemic problem and cannot be solved piecemeal. It has to be confronted holistically and comprehensively. Only action by a unified citizenry can sort out the logjam in our country be dealt with.
This is then the system in which Gen. Aronda was caught up. There are many like him.

People need to harmonize what they believe with what they do. It is that conflict that forced key pillars of the NRM to become its fiercest critics.

Byanyima, Besigye, Muntu, Bukenya, Sejusa…The list keeps growing.

From the time of the scandalous Kyankwanzi resolution declaring the sole candidature of Museveni, I concluded that Museveni was just one big defection away from defeat.

That big defection has happened in the shape of Amama Mbabazi. As the mechanic and custodian of the toolbox of the yellow bus he knows the system thoroughly.

The system also knows him. Between him and Museveni there can only be armed peace, like in Gaza.

That is why rather than being a Lone Ranger he has joined the ranks of the struggling masses in TDA.

He needs to disconnect himself from the regime and reconnect himself to the democratic turbines of the masses hungry for change.
Unlike Gen. Aronda, Amama has never been a serving army officer.

His military ranking is honorary, like Eriya Kategaya’s. As we head to the 2016 elections senior army officers will continue to be denied the option to retire.

Gen. Aronda could have been retired before Museveni appointed him Internal Affairs Minister.
Our role should be to help our people find meaning in what is going on however meaningless things may be.

A bewildered people can resort to self destruction. Interpreting reality is our core role. That is what Mandela did to prevent a conflagration in South Africa.
At the heart of the regime are people who know that we can’t go on like this.

They see a man drunk on power douse the nation with petrol and is about to strike a match. It is our duty to tell them that the situation is not helpless.

As the saying goes, ‘don’t just sit there, do something’. You have a choice. The battle lines are increasingly becoming clearer between the Museveni regime and the democracy seeking masses

As the scriptures say you are either hot or cold. If you are lukewarm, you will be spat out. Aronda could have fallen victim or been sacrificed for his well known but unspoken convictions. Who knows?
We should demand a full inquest into his surreal and bizarre death. Condolences are not enough. We deserve the truth.

It should not be like the case of my comrade Brig. Noble Mayombo where a commission of inquiry made a report but the report remains hidden. Or Andrew Kayira whose death remains a mystery todate.
I mourn Aronda because in the deep recesses of his heart he had solid values. I dare say Christian values.

He was first and foremost a soldier. He was a man of few words. He used to complain about opening and closing the endless seminars that go on in government.

As minister that was his docket. As a soldier and a Chief of Defence forces he could issue orders and they get executed.

As a minister he was entangled in a bureaucracy where he could issue orders and nothing happens.

Sometimes he shared his frustration. He could not sit easy when the IGP and other powerful and well connected police officers ran rings around him as they executed the ‘orders from above’.
Lastly I mourn Aronda because he was not a sycophant. He was not one of the grovelers waiting for crumbs from the master’s table. As much as possible he maintained his dignity. Rest in peace Gen. Aronda.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe reads wrong speech

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has read out the wrong speech at the opening of parliament.

bob mugabe

He gave the same one during his state-of-the-nation address on 25 August, when he was heckled by opposition MPs.

His spokesman told the state-run Herald paper the error was because of a mix-up in the president’s secretarial office.

The BBC’s Brian Hungwe in Harare says tensions were high ahead of the speech and the state broadcaster cancelled its live feed fearing further disruptions.

At least six MPs from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) received a text message from a sender called “Death” warning them to behave.

“Warning: Immunity ends in parliament… act wisely by not disturbing the proceedings of parliament,” the message on opposition MP Nelson Chamisa’s phone said.

Before the 91-year-old president spoke, the parliamentary speaker also warned against disrupting proceedings.

After Mr Mugabe began speaking, it was not long before it dawned on those present that they had heard it all before, our reporter says.

But during the speech, the MDC members sat quietly, while ruling Zanu-PF party supporters clapped at regular intervals, Reuters news agency reports.

The president made reference to the country amending labour laws to protect workers from arbitrary termination of employment, efforts being made to stimulate investment and the country registering modest growth in tourism and agriculture, our correspondent says.

The first time Mr Mugabe read the speech opposition MPs sang protest songs against his 10-point plan to solve the country’s economic crisis.

Presidential spokesman George Charamba said the error in delivering the wrong speech was “sincerely regretted”.

He added that the president would read the correct speech later at a hotel in the capital Harare, Reuters reports.

Vice President Hon. Edward Ssekandi (C), Minister of Finance Matiya Kasaijja (Extreme Left), MTN CEO Brian Gouldie (next to Kasaijja) flanked by other guests witness a demo of the service by DFCU bank official.

This follows the launch of a strategic partnership between the two brands in which MTN is extending the service to DFCU Bank customers.

With the Bank Deposit and Withdraw service, MTN is looking at further extending affordable financial services on the phone in simple ways that customers can use easily use.

The deposit and withdraw service means that customers can save productive time that is otherwise spent in long queues in banks or in traffic jams moving to and from Banks.

This services also means that customers do not have to worry about the issue of distance for simple banking transactions, it means that a farmer tending to business in their farms shouldn’t worry about losing time moving to banks to deposit or withdraw money.

A car dealer who wants to clear his taxes at the border can access their accounts to complete transactions without the hustle of looking for a banking hall.

In 2009, MTN for the first time in Uganda launched Mobile Money – a service that has since transformed the concept of banking.

More and more Ugandans now have access to financial services through the phone.

Mobile Money means that customers can access money instantly, pay bills, buy airtime, pay taxes and shop among other things without necessarily moving from the comfort of a home or distracted from the important matters of business.

And with DFCU Bank’s spread of customers across Uganda, MTN Mobile Money’s countrywide network of over 160,000 agents means that customers all around Uganda have access to cash that can then either be deposited or withdrawn from the bank.

DFCU Bank is part of a host of 6 other partner banks that MTN has partnered with for customers to access money in their accounts through the phone.

The other partner banks include; Bank of Africa, Centenary bank, Posta Uganda, Pride Micro Finance, UgaFode Micro Finance and Stanbic bank.

Speaking as the guest of honor at the launch event, Uganda’s Vice President H.E. Edward Ssekandi commended all partners for their efforts towards extending financial services to the majority of Ugandans.

“I would like to thank DFCU Bank and its partners for the effort towards extending financial services to all Ugandans. But I would also urge you to keep the charges at the minimum so as to ensure that the service is affordable,” he said.

On his part, the MTN CEO, Brian Gouldie, said; “Our mission this year has been to embed MTN Mobile Money into the fabric of society. MTN prides itself in the ability to identify and meet customers’ needs.”

“DFCU’s MobilePlus is supported by MTN Mobile money and further enhances financial access by reducing the cost of banking while delivering convenience that we believe ultimately leads to increased productivity,” he added

DFCU’s chairman Hon. Elly Karuhanga said; “In line with improving on financial inclusion, DFCU has transcended physical barriers by taking banking closer to the customer through mobile banking. We are pleased to be launching our MobilePlus service today in collaboration with our telecom partners.”

The launch was also attended by Uganda’s Finance Minister, Hon. Matia Kasaija who applauded DFCU and its partners for introducing a banking service that creates linkages between bank accounts and mobile money accounts.

While figures indicate that over 85 percent of mobile payments in the country are through the MTN Mobile Money platform, the continued integration of financial services will ensure further delivery of financial inclusion for all persons across Uganda. This means more productivity for businesses and communities.

MTN Mobile Money subscriptions have grown from 7.3 million in December 2014 to a current total of 8.2 million representing a 12.8% year to date growth.

The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has described the late Hon. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima as a person of integrity and humility; one who listened to everyone and yet only spoke after ascertaining the facts.

kadaga

Kadaga who was commiserating with the family and mourners at the Aronda family residence in Buziga, said she was in disbelief when she got word of the incident.

“I heard the sad news on radio on Saturday morning and I totally denounced it until I got a call from Hon. James Baba; that is when I realized that it was true,” she said.

Kadaga praised the fallen Internal Affairs Minister for his work on the colossal National Identity Card project that had faced a lot of opposition in Parliament.

“One of my most abiding memories of him after he joined the front bench is that he would listen, take notes and when he came out to speak, he would have done the necessary research,” the Speaker underlined.

She further described Gen. Aronda as a distinguished officer who had served diligently in the previous Parliaments.

Kadaga inferred to the mourners that the greater family of Gen. Aronda was the people of Uganda, because he had treated all people equally, regardless of whether they were civilian or military.

Maj. Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde, who presided over the night mass as Master of Ceremonies, expressed his gratitude to the Rt. Hon. Speaker, and the public at large for the support that had been extended to the family following the tragedy.

“The family of the late Gen. Aronda is really honored and we are truly grateful for the love and support that you have shown us,” he said.

“The mere fact that you, the Speaker of Parliament have come to condole with us is very touching and comforting,” Tumukunde added.

The Speaker informed the mourners that a special parliamentary sitting had been called for Thursday 17th September 2015 to honour the late Hon. Gen Aronda Nyakairima.

Hon. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, Minister for Internal Affairs and UPDF Representative in Parliament, died quite suddenly in the early hours of Saturday 12th September, while returning from an official trip to South Korea.

I’m better than Davido—A Pass

Singer Alexander Bagonza famously known by his stage name, A Pass seems to be slowly growing wings now and he has attempted to fly musically.

A PASS
A PASS

Latest from the ‘Wuuyo’ hit maker is that he feels so better and higher than Nigerian star Davido of the ‘Skelewu’ fame.

For starters, Davido is one of the most celebrated African artists both on the continent and globally, but our own A Pass says he’s better than him.

After posting a long rant About Illuminati, the dancehall and reggae sensation got comments from the fans including one from keith Platinumz which read “U’ve not even reached Davido’s level and you’re talking about Illuminati?”

The angry A Pass hit back with a very comical and rather drunk comment that left many fans in shock.

“Who is Davido to me, what level is he at?” he asked.

Not so long ago, A Pass released his video for the reggae song ‘Am so high’ and from the look of things, he may actually be high on some cheap drugs right now.

A new “national democratic council” had taken control to end the “deviant regime”, Lt-Col Mamadou Bamba said on state television.

Interim parliament speaker Cheriff Sy said the move was “clearly a coup”.

Heavy shooting could be heard at the main square in the capital, Oaugadougou to disperse protesters, reports the BBC’s Yacouba Ouedraogo from the city.

On Wednesday, the presidential guard arrested interim President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida at a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace.

They were due to hand power to a new government after elections on 11 October.

Long-serving ruler Blaise Compaore was ousted in a popular uprising last year.

‘Rise up’

Some of his key allies had been barred from contesting the election.

In his announcement, Lt-Col Bamba said wide-ranging talks were being held to form a new interim government that would organise “peaceful and inclusive elections”.

Mr Sy told French radio station RFT that that people should “immediately rise up” in response to the coup.

A witness told Reuters news agency that more than 100 people had gathered at Revolution Square to demand the release of the interim government leaders.

Hundreds of people also protested on Wednesday to demand their release.

14 Year Old Ahmed Mohamed Creates clock, Shows Teachers, Gets Arrested

When Ahmed Mohamed went to his high school in Irving, Texas, Monday, he was so excited. A teenager with dreams of becoming an engineer, he wanted to show his teacher the digital clock he’d made from a pencil case.

The 14-year-old’s day ended not with praise, but punishment, after the school called police and he was arrested.

“I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her,” Ahmed told reporters Wednesday. “It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it.”

Ahmed talked to the media gathered on his front yard and appeared to wear the same NASA T-shirt he had on in a picture taken as he was being arrested. In the image, he looks confused and upset as he’s being led out of school in handcuffs.

“They arrested me and they told me that I committed the crime of a hoax bomb, a fake bomb,” the freshman later explained to WFAA after authorities released him.

Irving Police spokesman Officer James McLellan told the station, “We attempted to question the juvenile about what it was and he would simply only tell us that it was a clock.”

The teenager did that because, well, it was a clock, he said.

On Wednesday, police announced the teen will not be charged.

Chief Larry Boyd said Ahmed should have been “forthcoming” by going beyond the description that what he made was a clock. But Boyd said authorities determined that the teenager did not intend to alarm anyone and the device, which the chief called “a homemade experiment,” was innocuous.

Ahmed, who aspires to go to MIT, said he was pleased the charges were dropped and not bothered that police didn’t apologize for arresting him. After he said he was interrogated by police without an attorney present, his lawyer, Linda Moreno, told reporters they wouldn’t answer any more questions about the legal process.

Ahmed is suspended until Thursday, he said, but is thinking about transferring to another high school.

Social media reacts

Outrage over the incident — with many saying the student was profiled because he’s Muslim — spread on social media as #IStandWithAhmed started trending worldwide on Twitter with more than 100,000 tweets Tuesday morning. The school’s Facebook page is roiling with sharp criticism of the way the teen was treated, and the hashtag #engineersforahmed is gaining popularity.

President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and thousands of others are showing support for Ahmed.

“Cool clock, Ahmed,” Obama tweeted. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

The President would like the teen to join him and other scientists next month for the White House’s annual Astronomy Night, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.

Ahmed said Wednesday he was going to the White House.

Clinton tweeted that “assumptions don’t keep us safe” and urged the teenager to “keep building.”

“I think this wouldn’t even be a question if his name wasn’t Ahmed Mohamed,” said Alia Salem of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “He is an excited kid who is very bright and wants to share it with his teachers.”

Many criticized the school on Facebook. Its creator, Mark Zuckerberg, posted his support.

“Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I’d love to meet you. Keep building.”

Kevin McKinney posted, “How did a bunch of complete idiots end up accidentally running a school? Were you all yanked out of a zoo and given paychecks? Learning centers are for teaching … not for ruining innocent people’s lives with your racism and pathetic stupidity! … “This kid is destined to be something great if the dimwits of Irving don’t ruin him first.”

Mocking Irving Schools’ motto, Bill Cain wrote: “‘Where children come first’ … to jail in handcuffs. Way to go, Irving.”

Chance Williams posted, “Ahmed Mohamed deserves a public apology from you, the school administrators, police, and teachers involved in his arrest. I hope he sues, and the school district has to pay for his college education.”

Teen’s father saw son surrounded by police

Texas law stipulates that a person who commits a hoax bomb offense is one who “knowingly manufactures, sells, purchases, transports, or possesses a hoax bomb with intent to use” it or intentionally causes alarm or reaction.

Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, who immigrated from Sudan and has twice run for that country’s presidency, told CNN Wednesday that he was upset the school did not contact him immediately to tell him about the situation.

The first he heard of it was when he received a call from police, who said his son was being charged with having a hoax bomb, Mohamed said.

He rushed to the police station, where he saw his son “surrounded by five police and he was handcuffed,” the father said. Ahmed told his father he’d asked to phone him but the police told him he could not because he was under arrest, Mohamed said.

“I asked if I could talk to or speak to my son and they told me, ‘No, not right now’ because they were taking his fingerprints and asking him questions,” Mohamed said. “I asked if I could see the thing they were calling a bomb. The police never let me even see it but I knew what my son brought to school. It was an alarm clock that he made. He wakes up with it most mornings. …”

Police are holding the clock as evidence, Mohamed said.

A reporter at a news conference Wednesday asked Chief Boyd about the allegations that Ahmed was told he could not call his father and was interrogated alone for some time at the station.

“I’m not aware of that,” the chief said, adding that the incident isn’t being investigated.

Boyd was also asked if the teen’s religious or ethnic identity played a role in how he was treated. The chief said it did not, and he praised the department’s relationship with Irving’s Muslim community.

However, he said, “We live in an age where you can’t take things like that to school.”

‘People think Muslims are terrorists’

“My son is a very brilliant boy,” Mohamed said. “We need people like him in this country.”

The teen has never been in trouble, the father said, saying he thinks this is a case of Islamophobia. “My son’s name is Mohamed — people just think Muslims are terrorists but we are peaceful, we are not that way.”

“We live in the land of opportunity to grow and help and the people who did this to my son, they do not see him that way,” Mohamed continued. “My son said over and over that this was an alarm clock and my son only brought it to school to ask for help from his teachers, to show that he can do this amazing thing and maybe get appreciation and to show him (he can become) something bigger in the world — an inventor.”

Mohamed said it wasn’t until after the fact that he received a call and an email from the school, telling him about Ahmed’s arrest and informing him that his son had been suspended for three days.

The father and others were meeting Wednesday with attorneys to decide what steps, if any, they might take next, Mohamed said.

At the Wednesday news conference, a spokeswoman for the Irving Independent School District told reporters that the way the teen’s experience has been described in media reports is “unbalanced.”

She declined to explain why, citing the need to protect a student’s privacy.

The statement she made was posted on the district’s site Wednesday. When the family gives written permission to discuss the incident, the school will offer more information, she said.

Earlier in the day, MacArthur High School provided a statement to CNN in which it said it was cooperating with authorities and said privacy laws prohibited it from sharing details about student discipline. “We can assure everyone that school administrators are handling the situation in accordance with the Irving ISD Student Code of Conduct and applicable laws.”

Mohamed isn’t sure if his son will go back to school Thursday. He’s afraid the police will keep his invention and he’s worried about his son being called names.

But he’s happy about the widespread outpouring of support. His family started the hashtag#Thankyouforstandingwithme.

“It gives him hope,” the teen’s father said. “Right now he is trying to just stay positive and is listening to the news about him and reading about people’s comments him on social media. It’s really too much for him to take in right now, but long term it will be good for him. He doesn’t want to show he is a victim.”

It was an English teacher who got spooked and reported Ahmed to the principal, the police said.

“We always ask our students and staff to immediately report if they observe any suspicious items and/or suspicious behavior,” the school’s statement reads. “If something is out of the ordinary, the information should be reported immediately to a school administrator and/or the police so it can be addressed right away. We will always take necessary precautions to protect our students and keep our school community as safe as possible.”

A reporter spoke with the boy in his bedroom, which is full of equipment that allows him to tinker and create.

“Here in high school, none of the teachers know what I can do,” Ahmed told the paper while he soldered metal and played around with a cable.

A middle school robotics club member, the teen has won awards for his inventions.

He recalled showing one teacher the clock and her telling him that she thought it was “nice” but he shouldn’t show other instructors, according to the paper. The teen put the clock in his bookbag but an alarm beeped in the middle of sixth period and Ahmed showed the teacher what he had, the newspaper reported.

“She was like, it looks like a bomb,” he said.

“I told her, ‘It doesn’t look like a bomb to me.'”

When Ahmed was called out of class, he said he was brought into a room with four police officers, one of whom said, “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”

Ahmed told the Dallas Morning News that he felt aware of what he looked like and his name as the officers fired questions at him.

He recalled that one officer said to him, “So you tried to make a bomb?”

He disputed that and kept telling them he’d created a clock.

Meanwhile, the teen’s defenders continue to slam the school and police.

“I really hope you guys are absolutely ashamed for possibly ruining the ingenuity of one bright kid who made a CLOCK for crying out loud. What kind of education does your professors have?” David Velez wrote on the school’s Facebook page. “It sounds like they are the ones that need to be going back to school!”

“Shame on your school and its administration for arresting Ahmed Mohamed,” wrote Jillian York. “Way to stifle a kid’s creativity and energy. I hope you’re all replaced with compassionate, non-racist, administrators and teachers.
